In Memory Of Nathan Farb and James Tolkan

We are saddened to share the passing of two Adirondack Film Alumni: Actor James Tolkan and Photographer/Artist, Nathan Farb.

A character actor who was celebrated for his roles in “Back to the Future” and “Top Gun”, James Tolkan (or “Jimmy” as the community liked to call him) and his wife Parmelee have supported the Lake Placid Film Festival since its inception in 2000. For years, Tolkan served on several panels and helped make our attendees feel the kindness and community that the Adirondacks and our organization embody.

One such program was an in-depth conversation with Adirondack Film founder, Kathleen Carroll, that provided a retrospective of his work. “Jimmy” lit up the room with behind the scenes stories that made his career one of a kind.

In addition to his immense screen presence, Tolkan was always willing to lend a helping hand. When the Festival (formerly known as the Lake Placid Film Forum) was in its infancy, Jimmy went out his way to genuinely tell our then Board Chair Nelson Page, “if there is ever anything I can do, just ask.” Our condolences go out to Parmelee and their three nieces.

Nathan Farb was a singular artist in his own right.  His accomplishments as a photographer and activist span over half a century, with his work being featured in the New York Times and countless national museums including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

An Adirondack native, Nathan was a vital supporter to Adirondack Film’s mission. His most important contribution was his unwavering support of Kathleen Carroll, who was the artistic visionary of the Film Forum.  With Nathan’s help and encouragement, Kathleen persisted in navigating the ever changing film festival world and continued to bring quality guests and programming to the LPFF year after year.

In 2024, Adirondack Film had the honor of screening Nathan Farb and the Cold War, a feature length documentary on Nathan’s career, to a near sold-out crowd at the Lake Placid Film Festival. Our condolences go out to Nathan’s family and friends.
